The 1904 Morgan dollar is not known for particularly good strike quality or luster, and this fact shows in the dearth of Gems, PLs, or DMPLs for this issue. While essentially common up through a grade of MS64, populations drop off dramatically at the MS65 level and in MS66 and MS67 the numbers are very small, rendering this date a real conditional rarity. Of the PLs and DMPLs, the relatively few survivors are mainly known under MS65, though a handful are collectively known in the Gem level. The year 1904 marked the end of the original run of Morgan dollars, which returned for one final production year in 1921.
