The 1899-S Morgan dollar is a better date to be sure, but it is by no means rare, at least not in circulated or lower uncirculated grades. While generally lustrous and well struck, the 1899-S Morgan dollar becomes significantly scarcer in MS65 and extremely scarce in MS66. Examples grading in the MS67 level are quite rare. PLs are scarce in all grades, and the DMPL is, by Morgan dollar standards at the least, quite rare.
