The 1908-D $20 double eagle is among the first of the branch-mint Saints to carry IN GOD WE TRUST, added to the reverse of the coin in 1908 to appease a public that had become increasingly irritated by the motto's absence on the new coin. While the 1908-D is relatively common in circulated and lower uncirculated grades, it is scarce in Choice Uncirculated and rare in the Gem levels.
